It is the mission of the digital library as a part of the library media center to serve all students, faculty, administrators, and support staff through the collection and dissemination of electronic sources that align to the curriculum, support inquiry and research needs and the aesthetic growth of a diverse school population. The responsibility of digital library is to provide access to information for students of grades kindergarten through grade eight and faculty members, reinforce the curriculum, and promote literacy and the enjoyment of reading for all. All resources keep with the mission of Milford Public Schools.

My goal is to empower elementary-aged students to become independent information seekers and to grow aesthetically by developing a love for reading and learning as they continue their lives as life-long learners.

Media Center Mission Statement

Collection Policy & Criteria

It is the duty of Ms. Christolini to search for school appropriate websites, databases, multimedia files and more to create a website with links to specific grade level subject matter (PK-5), reading materials, informational resources that transfer students to interactive and educational websites. All web-based resources are based upon Milford Acceptable Use Policy and are school appropriate sites based upon the following criteria.

Resources must meet the following criteria:

1.Collection resources must align with the district curriculum, which is aligned to the Common Core State Standards. Accessing such resources will allow users to meet success with CCSS.

2.Resources must be readable per grade level as determined by Lexile level or level determined by document length and vocabulary. Lexile levels range from 450L-1000L. Materials will range from lower pk-5 for students who are lower and higher than their independent levels.

3.Resources must be web-based and accessible as full-text documents.

4.Resources must be free of legal and copyright problems.

Organization of Collection

Resources are gathered to meet the educational needs of students that align to the Common Core. Such resources include links to websites for educational and pleasurable purposes. All resources are organized alphabetically by grade level and subject matter such as “Grade Levels” Pk-K, 1-2, 3-4, and 5 and by “Subject Matters" such as Computer Skills; English Language Arts (ELA); Math; Social Studies and Writing. There is also a separate page on the DL for teachers to access teaching resources.

Use Access and Use

Students can browse the collections by grade level and subject matter. Students can visit the website during school hours and after school when they are home. Students do not have any further login access on the DL or ability to link to social media websites such as Facebook or Twitter due to filters that block social media websites that are inappropriate under school rules and conditions. Users are able to navigate the digital library by the use of navigation bar, download documents and PowerPoint presentations, access the library catalog through a hyperlink and a message forum for users to leave a message or ask a question.

Service Features

Users are able to leave a message on the DL homepage, which are sent to Ms. Christolini. Users have the opportunity to message Ms. Christolini with any technical difficulties, questions about resources and comments/suggestions to better serve users.

Interface Design

The DL is made for users to efficiently and effectively navigate through pages and subpages of educational resources.  Users as young as five and up to middle school age can find what they are looking for with just a few clicks. The DL has a component of creativity with the use of  links, videos, images and multimedia features that intrigue users to explore!   Bright colors and size-appropriate fonts are used to hyperlink images and text to the school catalog, educational websites and state databases.

Maintenance Plan

The DL is maintained solely by the Ms. Christolini as necessary. It is proposed that the DL is to be updated at least once a week. The update includes checking links and adding new websites and information. The book raffle on the homepage is changed out once every month and the new books presented on the homepage are changed weekly.
